flash, elearning, random thoughts

I just uploaded an update to my personal web site after 3 years “I’ll do it later.”
Creating this version was a bit of a struggle for me - not only as a fight against procrastination but trying to figure out what I wanted to “say,” if anything, about myself. The result is something simple and subdued overall with a strong grid layout and a little flair. I’m not really sure what that “says” about me - but I think that it’s fitting for where I am at this point. I also wrote my first bio in over 7 years and took out a lot of old crap from my portfolio. So much of what I’ve done these past 5 years has been code - I have little to show visually.
I created it using my ramen player. There are a few things that I still want to add - like sound effects - but I’ll get around to it later.

I found this blog a few weeks ago - designcharlotte.org. It’s a good way to showcase local design talent and connect people. And thank you Jak for adding a link to me!

I really need to redesign my personal site, it hasn’t been touched in almost 3 years. Wonder if I should forgo sleep this month and join the May 1st Reboot?
Update - In a moment of boredom/weakness during a recent project meeting, I signed up. Let’s see how creative I can be in 3 hours a day for 2 weeks.

It liiiives. According to Smashing Magazine. Fine by me - as a designer, organic dirty designs are much more fun to create than shiny rectangles with gradients. I got started in design the mid/late 90’s with a huge case of David Carson envy - designing grungy will be like coming home. So sentimental.
At least my old Typography in Decay site is tendy again. No updates needed!

Robbie Player is updating his blog again. I like the idea of a blog that also aggregates feeds of your activity from other social sites. Cool concept.
Robbie is a developer/designer at Sudiobanks - really great webcentric design firm here in Charlotte. They do awesome work.

Credit to Jason Merrill for finding this site:
Inspiration. WHITEvoid, an interactive design firm in Berlin, developed a really cool user interface that makes liberal use of real 3D in Flash. You have to experience it to appreciate what I mean.  Check it out at whitevoid.com/application. It gave me some ideas for a portfolio gallery and other uses of 3D for “non-real world object” interactivity. Oh and if you get a chance, just for fun, check out their “MIDI Gun” on the site.
